Before You Buy a Used Forklift, Ask These 3 Questions (1)

Buying a used forklift can be a bit like going on a blind date. Sometimes things go well and sometimes the outcome is disappointing.

But it doesn't have to be that way. For the past 45 years, Midco, has successfully matched used forklifts to buyers at companies just like yours. Our advice? Before you buy a used forklift, learn to ask the right questions.

There are plenty of good reasons to buy a used forklift. Used forklifts can help you meet an unexpected equipment need and maximize your buying power. Unfortunately, reliability concerns prevent some buyers from even considering a used forklift — even though they cost about 50% less than a comparable new forklift.

3 Key Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Used Forklift

If you want to avoid buying a forklift with hidden problems, here are three essential questions to ask:

#1 How and where was the forklift used?
Extreme temperatures, heavy loads, continuous use and a dirty work environment can shorten the life of a forklift.

#2 Did the forklift receive regular maintenance?
Proper maintenance prevents expensive repairs in the short and long term. The seller should be able to provide the forklift's maintenance records and/or a maintenance contract from a reputable provider.

#3 How many hours does it have?
The best way to gauge a forklift’s age and remaining useful life is by looking at the number of hours it has. An average forklift lasts about 10,000 hours. That said, Toyota forklifts commonly last more than 20,000 hours.
